About Lake Chelan
Originally home to Salish speaking Native Americans, Lake Chelan is a small town in the center of Washington established in the late 1800s. Shortly after discovering it, farmers and ranchers discovered that they could actually plant and grow luscious orchards without irrigation. From there, Lake Chelan has grown to become famous for the rich farming opportunities, especially in apples, cherries, and grapes. As a town, Chelan has decided to stay connected to its history and has several historically named landmarks. Sanders Street is named after one of the original settlers, William Sanders, and Woodin Avenue is named after L.H. Woodin who created a sawmill at the base of the lake.
Today, Chelan is home to just over 4,000 residents who have created a tight knit community that thrives on the tourist economy drawn in by the crystal clear lake. At 50 miles long, Lake Chelan is one of the largest lakes in the United States. Once you visit, you’ll understand why Chelan is one of the most popular vacation spots in Washington.
